Our Philosophy: Celebrating Neurodivergence, Cultivating Potential

At Lake Michigan Academy, we don’t just see learning differences; we see limitless potential. We believe that every student is a unique thinker with a perspective the world needs. Our philosophy is rooted in the idea that when we change the environment—not the child—extraordinary growth happens.

A Community of Collaborative Growth

Education is a shared journey. We believe that true success is built on a vibrant partnership between the student, the family, and our expert educators. At LMA, we foster a student-centered environment where every individual is seen, heard, and valued. By working together, we ensure that every learner has the support and resources they need to reach their full potential.

Empowering Identity through Success

We know that for many of our students, their greatest “gifts” are often those that haven’t been recognized in traditional settings. We flip the narrative from “remediation” to empowerment. By providing opportunities for consistent, meaningful success, we help students rebuild their self-confidence. Here, success isn’t just a goal—it’s the foundation upon which our students build their identities as capable, creative, and brilliant individuals.

Innovation Through Action: The Power of Project-Based Learning

At LMA, we know that neurodivergent minds often thrive when they can see the “big picture.” That’s why we’ve integrated Project-Based Learning (PBL) as a cornerstone of our daytime program. PBL moves beyond traditional rote memorization, inviting students to dive deep into real-world challenges that ignite their curiosity.

Why PBL is a Game-Changer for our Students:

  • Strengthens Executive Function: By managing a project from start to finish, students practice the “brain muscles” of planning, organization, and time management in a hands-on, meaningful way.
  • Showcases Multi-Modal Strengths: Whether a student is a brilliant designer, a charismatic speaker, or a technical whiz, PBL allows them to lead with their strengths.
  • Increases Deep Engagement: When learning is tied to a tangible outcome—like building an ecosystem model or launching a mock business—the “why” of education becomes crystal clear.

Innovation in Every Classroom

Because every brain is wired differently, our teaching is designed to be as dynamic as our students. Our educators are specialists in the science of neurodivergent learning, utilizing evidence-based strategies (like the Orton-Gillingham approach) and Project-Based Learning to bring concepts to life. With an average student-to-teacher ratio of 8:1, we provide the personalized attention necessary to tailor every lesson to the specific strengths and interests of the learner.

The Art of Self-Advocacy

Our ultimate goal goes beyond the classroom walls. We are dedicated to helping students understand their own unique minds. By teaching self-advocacy and independence, we give our students the tools to navigate the world with confidence. Whether they are heading to college, trade school, or the workforce, LMA graduates leave us knowing how to speak up for their needs and lead with their strengths.

Literacy & Language Mastery

We believe literacy is the gateway to all other learning. Our program integrates the five core components of literacy—phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary—into every subject. By making literacy a school-wide focus, we ensure our students develop the communication skills they need to express their ideas clearly and impactfully.
