Elementary and Middle School
Building on our core philosophy, we believe that education should evolve as your child grows. At Lake Michigan Academy, our curriculum is intentionally designed to meet the developmental needs of neurodivergent learners at every stage—from building the first bricks of literacy to launching into a career or college.
Elementary School: The Joy of Discovery & Foundational Mastery
In our elementary program, we focus on creating a safe, vibrant space where students can rediscover the joy of learning. We move away from the “one-size-fits-all” pressure and focus on building the bedrock of academic success.
- Specialized Skill Labs: We use evidence-based, multi-sensory methods to bridge early skill gaps in reading, writing, and math. These small-group labs ensure that every child gets the specific “tools” they need right from the start.
- The Whole Child Approach: Our curriculum includes Project-Based Learning, music, and movement to ensure students are developing physically and creatively.
- STEAM & People Skills: Through early Project-Based Learning and dedicated “People Skills” sessions, we help students develop social-emotional intelligence and a curiosity about how the world works.
Middle School: Building Confidence & Executive Function
Middle school is a time of transition and self-discovery. We help our students navigate this phase by shifting the focus toward independence and organizational mastery.
- Executive Function Strategies: We explicitly teach the “how” of learning—organization, time management, and technology use—giving students a sense of control over their academic lives.
- Service & Communication: Students engage in service-learning projects that emphasize community impact, helping them develop strong communication and leadership skills.
- Employability Foundations: Even in middle school, we begin introducing the concepts of teamwork and professional habits, framing their unique learning styles as assets for their future careers.
